How are the sensors from ServersCheck connected?

Each environmental sensor from ServersCheck has its own IP address. It can get it through DHCP or you can set a fixed IP address as referenced in the quick install guide. Each sensor requires a network cable to plug it into the network.

If your network is PoE enabled, then the sensor gets its power through the network. Otherwise you need an available power outlet for each sensor to plug-in for the optional power adapter.

The sensors can independently monitor sensor readings a trigger alerts via email. There is no additional software needed for this feature. The sensors do this autonomously.

For centralized monitoring, you will need a SNMP enabled management solution such as ServersCheck's Monitoring Appliance giving you on top of competing solutions alerting capabilities via 2-way SMS. Open source software such as Nagios, MRTG, Cacti are known to work well with the sensors too. Communication between sensors and the central management system is done of over the TCP/IP network using the UDP SNMP protocol. Typically SNMP runs on port 161. The sensors support SNMP v1 & v2
